Dimpur Naga Students' Union Urges Extension of Summer Break Due to Extreme Heat

Dimapur, June 30, 2025: In light of the intense summer heatwave sweeping Dimapur, the Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) has issued a formal appeal urging the extension of the summer break for government schools. Citing health and safety concerns for both students and teachers, the Union has called upon the concerned department to revise the existing academic calendar.

As per the department’s academic calendar for 2025, the summer break is currently scheduled from July 14 to July 28. However, DNSU argues that this two-week duration is insufficient, especially considering the scorching temperatures that typically peak during July and August in Dimapur. The union has requested that the vacation be extended to at least 20 days, ideally spanning the entire month until the fourth week of August 2025.

In a press release signed by General Secretary Michael Kath and Secretary (Educational) Kevin Gonmei, the DNSU highlighted the compounding challenges of extreme weather, waterlogging, and frequent power outages in the urban areas of Dimapur. These issues, combined with the lack of backup power systems in most schools, are said to pose serious health risks and create obstacles to regular classroom learning.

Furthermore, the DNSU has proposed an alternative adjustment to the winter break, considering Dimapur’s relatively mild winter climate. The Union suggested that a longer winter session could help students cover their syllabus effectively, without the added stress of enduring the peak summer heat.

"The Union remains hopeful that the concerned department will seriously consider this pressing appeal and take appropriate measures to ensure a more conducive learning environment for all students," the press release concluded.

This move by the DNSU underscores the growing concern over climate-resilient academic planning in Nagaland’s educational institutions.
